A deck can be a challenging environment for growing plants. Planting heat-loving vegetable plants in wooden boxes is a practical way to bring plant life to a deck while also providing food for the table. Vegetables can work very well in a planter. Summer vegetables including tomatoes, peppers, eggplants and cucumbers will thrive on a hot sunny deck. On a cool, partly shady deck, try growing greens such as lettuce or spinach in containers. Try planting spring greens and transitioning to hot weather crops as the growing season progresses. The planters should be made of rot-resistant wood and should be set on blocks so that draining water won't affect the deck surface. These boxes are usually made of cedar and can be purchased at a local garden store. Make sure there is a way for the excess water to drain out of the box and away from the deck. Planting a variety of vegetables will provide different leaf textures in the planters similar to a flower garden. The optional trellis can be used for tomatoes, beans, melons or cucumbers.
